‘Seafood training – the first step’

This is an interactive CD-ROM covering the underpinning knowledge in the four core units in the Seafood Industry Training Package

It is a very exciting product with around 3000 pages of photographs, videos, animations, drawings and interactive ‘quizzes’ covering the core units of competency for each of the catching, aquaculture, processing, retail/wholesale and distribution of the Seafood Industry. The core units of competency are included in every qualification from the Seafood Industry Training Package.

The CD-ROM looks at basic knowledge in food handling, working effectively, occupational health and safety and communication for the industry. It has examples from all over Australia covering such diverse subjects as tuna farming, yabby farming, crocodile farming, pearl farming and the Sydney Fish Market. It has recently been trialed with trainers across the country and has been enthusiastically welcomed as a very valuable resource.

Available NOW from Seafood Training Australia, phone +61-2-6281 0383.

'Managing seafood safety step by step'

This CD-ROM will assist people working in the seafood industry understand and comply with food safety requirements.

It is aimed at four user groups:

    • seafood industry trainees in either fishing operations, aquaculture or seafood processing and distribution
    • workplace trainers and mentors, and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)
    • seafood industry members
    • people wanting to demonstrate competency in food safety and/or people wishing to produce their own food safety plan for their own use.

The CD-ROM will take a holistic real work approach. Users will be able to see how the theory of food safety is translated into work practices and how several food safety considerations can be covered in one action.

Content for the CD-ROM is sourced from current Seafood Training Australia material, SeaQual food and safety publications and training videos. The focus has been to keep the framework flexible to allow the user to work through the development of a food safety plan independently of any formal or informal training.

The format allows learning to be self-paced and for learners located in remote locations to be able to have access (through multimedia) to observable activities.

The content will meet current Australian New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) and other relevant requirements for food safety plans.

This CD-ROM was "noted" by the Australian National Training Authority in September 2002.  It is a particularly useful tool for any business wishing to develop and implement their own food safety plan. For further information contact Seafood Training Australia on +61 2 6281 0383 or send an email on asic@asic.org.au.  Also available from Australian Training Products on +61-3 9655-0600 or go to http://www.atpl.net.au.

'It Happens' video targets on-board safety

This 45 minute video uses newsreel clips of accidents involving commercial fishing vessels and interviews with accident victims and witnesses. Produced by the New Zealand Seafood Industry Training Organisation (NZSITO), it is well suited to induction training of deckhands with a final sequence confirming the importance of on-board vessel safety.

    $46.00 plus GST and postage

'Boat to Belly' video makes sense of food safety and hygiene

The ‘Boat to Belly’ video presents the seafood industry’s chain approach to occupational health and safety, food safety and hygiene and demonstrates best practice in providing quality products. It comes with a user-friendly guide showing how the video can be used effectively in different workplace or training situations.

The video is available in Greek, Vietnamese and Cantonese, as well as English. To make the video even more useful and relevant, it has a strong element of seafood industry involvement, covering real life situations using industry participants rather than professional actors.

    $22.00 including GST and postage

'Crossing the Bar'

A new edition to the suite of products available at Seafood Training Australia, “Crossing the Bar” is targeted at existing and intending skippers. It sets out to discuss not only the “ins and outs” of how to cross the bar, it also delves into the factors which will help to decide when not to tackle it.

Developed in New Zealand, it features experienced skippers talking about their experiences, mistakes and fears. Included are discussions by a harbour master and naval architect on what makes the bar waters so tricky, and the basic seamanship rules which apply. The final section looks honestly at the pressures that skippers face when they are making up their minds whether to “have a go”.

Available for $46(including GST and postage) from Seafood Training Australia ph (02) 6281-0383 under arrangements with the New Zealand Seafood Industry Training Organisation.

Seafood Industry Training Package

The Seafood Industry Training Package brings together the competency standards, qualifications and assessment guidelines to make training smoother, better and smarter for employers, employees and people wanting to train for work in the Seafood Industry. Together these three components are known as endorsed components of the Training Package.

    Our Training Package contains:

    Competency standards

These describe the skills and knowledge needed to work effectively in the Seafood Industry. The full set of competency standards is made up of individual units. These are 'packaged' together to make up….

    Qualifications
Our Training Package has 23 qualifications covering work at different levels across 6 streams:

    • Aquaculture
    • Fishing Operations
    • Fishing Charter Operations
    • Fisheries Compliance
    • Seafood Processing
    • Seafood Sales and Distribution

These are nationally recognised qualifications that recognise skills gained on the job, through a formal course or a combination of both. To make sure that the assessment of people's skills and knowledge is fair and consistent, no matter where or when a person is assessed, our Training Package includes….

    Assessment Guidelines
These give advice to assessors on how to decide whether a person meets the competency standards for their job. The Assessment Guidelines also set out who can be an assessor and the role of employers and workplace supervisors in assessment.

Our Training Package was endorsed in February 2000 by the National Training Framework Committee – a body that only gives the tick to Training Packages that meet industry skill and qualification requirements. Version 2.00 released in April 2002 has a more flexible qualifications framework, Certificate IV and Diploma in seafood processing, 21 new units in seafood processing and 7 units in strategic industry leadership.

Available from Australian Training Products, ph. +61-3 9630-9836 or go to http://www.atpl.net.au.

More information on the qualifications framework, including links to units of competency, can be accessed and downloaded from, http://www.seafoodtraining.com.au/trainingpackage.html. Alternatively, go to http://www.ntis.gov.au for this information.

Aquaculture online teaching and learning resources

These resources form a ‘toolbox’ or set of multimedia materials designed to support the implementation of Certificates II and III in the Seafood Industry (Aquaculture). It contains the relevant units to enable a learner or a farmer to gain a foundation in aquaculture in a flexible way.

This means that learners and farmers based in diverse geographical locations can access training and knowledge based at the work place. It allows current and future workers to expand and/or develop their knowledge and provides opportunity for farmers who wish to diversify their activities to include land-based aquaculture.

A problem solving approach is used and activities are set in meaningful and authentic contexts. Simulation, instant feedback and diagnosis are used to build up the learner’s knowledge.

The materials can be customised to suit a diverse range of learners from those who have no knowledge and skills to those people who have had prior experience in aquaculture.

Available NOW from Australian Training Products, ph +61-3 9630-9836 or go to http://www.atpl.net.au.

For further information, go to www.westone.wa.gov.au/toolboxes/aquaculture.
